Law enforcement officials say these mortgage scams are being reported more and more often. And the most noticeable area, California. The Department of Real Estate has reported a 400% rise in this type of activity. A year ago records showed they had 10 open cases a year. This spring that number escalated to 750. U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder stated that the FBI’s “rescue scam” cases are 400% from 5 years ago.

Be prepared and know some of the signs of Mortgage Scams.

Get Help

If you need help with your mortgage loan, call your loan servicer first. If that fails, consider a nonprofit HUD-certified housing counselor. To find a housing counselor, call the Homeowner’s HOPE Hotline at (888) 995-HOPE. This hotline is a free service that’s operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Just when we thought some people couldn’t get any slimier, mortgage scammers are slithering from under their rocks. Look out California, seems you’re the ones targeted most.
